If you arrive at Schiphol and take a train towards Amsterdam, the key issue with contactless payment is where you check in and whether you use the identical card or device to check out. The station is below Schiphol Plaza, but it is easy to focus on the train and walk past the check-in reader. This guide covers passengers who have entered the Netherlands and reached the public area before using an ordinary domestic train. It is not an airside flight-transfer guide or a ticket rule for Eurostar and other international trains.
The cover is a fictional, AI-generated generic airport scene. It does not show Schiphol's real interior, an NS train, a real sign, or a reliable floor plan. Follow the airport's Train signs and live station information on the day.
1. Find Plaza; find the reader before the platform
Complete any immigration, baggage-reclaim and customs steps needed for your trip, then find Schiphol Plaza in the public area. Schiphol's public-transport guide places the railway station below the airport and the bus station outside in front of Plaza. Train passengers need not leave the building in search of a bus stop. Follow Train signs towards the descent, but first locate the check-in readers at the top of the stairs and escalators or near the Plaza lift, as described in Schiphol's train article. If you have heavy luggage or step-free needs, identify the lift and its reader before descending. Ask station staff if the payment point is not clear.
Buying a separate ticket calls for a different sequence. Schiphol lists public-transport ticket machines near baggage reclaim in Arrivals 1, 2 and 3 and at Plaza. Choose a ticket valid for your service and use the method printed on it. If you already bought a ticket, do not automatically tap a bank card as well. Decide on one valid payment route before travelling. NS's payment-card FAQ even describes a case where a phone wallet appears before a mobile barcode ticket can be scanned.
2. A physical card and its phone-wallet copy are not the same card
If you choose contactless payment, use a card, phone or smartwatch to check in before boarding. At the destination, check out with that same physical card or that same device. NS explicitly says a phone-wallet version is recognised as a different card from the physical payment card—even when the underlying account is the same. Tapping your phone at Schiphol and your bank card at Amsterdam Centraal can therefore fail to form one completed journey. Keep other contactless cards away from the reader so you know which one was read.
Check the reader's confirmation rather than assuming the tap worked. NS says a successful payment-card check-in or check-out displays IN Betaalpas or UIT Betaalpas (or the corresponding credit-card label). If the screen reports an error or its meaning is unclear, note the message and ask an NS employee before boarding. Not every foreign-issued or digital card is eligible. NS lists unsupported examples, so check its current list or buy a suitable ticket if your card cannot be used.
3. Choose a destination and a live train
Amsterdam Centraal is not automatically the closest station to every hotel. Put Schiphol Airport and the station near your actual address into the NS journey planner. Compare transfers, the final walk or local connection, and today's platform and fare. The payment steps in this article do not assume that Centraal is your destination. An older Schiphol article describes a 17-minute station-to-station train segment and platform 3 for a particular service; neither is a promise about the time from landing to your accommodation or a permanent platform assignment. Check today's board and NS updates, especially at night or during engineering work.
4. If you tapped incorrectly or forgot to check out
If you missed the exit tap, do not try to repair the previous trip by tapping a different card on a later journey. NS says a missed payment-card check-out can be corrected in OVpay from six hours after the journey. Its instructions say to find the journey using the NLOV reference number and charged amount, then enter the missing arrival station. Check your actual transaction before assuming an overcharge or refund. If you tapped in accidentally and did not travel, NS says checking out at the same station within 60 minutes cancels the journey without a charge. After that, or if you mixed phone and card, use the NS FAQ and linked help process and inspect the OVpay journey record rather than making more speculative taps.
| Situation | Check now | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| You bought a ticket | Its validity and scanning instructions | Tapping a bank card as an extra payment |
| You checked in by phone | The same phone at the destination | Checking out with its physical card |
| The reader message is unclear | IN/UIT and staff guidance |
Assuming the tap succeeded |
| You missed check-out | NS/OVpay journey details and correction timing | Tapping a different card to “fix” it |
FAQ
Is the train station outside the airport? No. It is below Schiphol Plaza; the bus station is outside in front of Plaza. Follow Train signs.
Can I check in by phone and out with my physical card? No. NS treats them as different cards. Use the same card or device at both ends.
Can I use discounts or first class with direct payment-card travel? NS says payment-card travel is second class without a discount or season ticket. Check the applicable ticket product separately if you need another arrangement.
Can I correct a missed check-out immediately online? NS says its OVpay correction process opens from six hours after the payment-card journey. Find the actual transaction and follow that process.
