Booking a return train trip in Korail+? Check which changes are live

In a 5 November 2026 release marking 60 days of integrated high-speed rail operations, Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Korea Railroad Corporation listed several improvements to the Korail+ booking app. They said the round-trip booking function, preservation of train-type settings, and preservation of nearby-station settings were completed in October. By contrast, showing the expected refund amount before a refund and improving quick booking were described as changes planned by the end of 2026. The announcement did not say that the latter two were already delivered. This distinction matters if you are buying or cancelling a ticket today.

The completed October changes

For a journey with an outward and return leg, start with the round-trip option in the current official app. Enter the date and stations for each direction, then inspect the results for the two legs separately. A convenient search flow does not guarantee available seats at both desired times. If one leg has no suitable seat, reassess the date, time, train or transfer before you pay. On the final payment screen, check the departure and arrival stations, departure time, passenger count, ticket type and total amount for each part of the journey.

Remembered settings can save taps, but they can also carry a choice from an earlier trip into a new one. This is especially important where Seoul, Yongsan or Suseo would give you substantially different routes to the station. Do not interpret “setting retained” as an automatic recommendation of the best station, train or price. Confirm that the retained train-type and nearby-station options still suit this trip, including the station from which you can actually depart.

Refund preview and quick booking remain plans

The release says the operator plans to complete improvements to pre-refund display of the expected refund amount and quick booking by the end of the year. It does not identify them as October-completed functions. If you might need to change or cancel a ticket, read the current cancellation terms, fees and any amount shown by the current transaction flow. Check official customer guidance if the effect is unclear before confirming a cancellation. Do not calculate your present refund from a feature that the release describes as a future improvement. Nor should you assume an existing menu with a similar name already includes every promised quick-booking change.

The ministry also described ongoing external-expert consultation on app layout and ease of use. It did not establish a universal button location, app version or precise launch day for the remaining features. Check current app notices and the live booking screen for the platform and route you will use.

Discounts and capacity: do not apply aggregate figures to one ticket

The announcement reports an average of 322,000 daily high-speed rail users from 1 September through 30 October, 12.6% more than in the comparable period a year earlier. That aggregate does not prove a seat is available on your chosen train. The ministry also reported wider public discounts for eligible children, teenagers, older passengers and pregnant travelers on former SRT routes, along with harmonized high-speed-to-conventional rail transfer discounts. An individual discount still depends on the applicable eligibility and booking conditions, route, train and transfer. Inspect the discount line and final fare on your own booking. The release's approximately KRW 51.5 billion in discounts and mileage benefits over two months is a system-wide total, not a promised saving on each ticket.

Before payment, open the official Korail website or app, confirm both directions, review any carried-over settings and discounts, and read the current refund terms. After payment, check that the booking history actually contains the intended tickets and their reservation details; avoid repeating a payment merely because the screen responded slowly. The ministry said it was strengthening responses to connection delays and automated unfair booking, but those plans do not replace checking your actual transaction. For travel day, use current operating and station notices rather than this release's historical usage figures.
