Official information checked 3 November 2026. If Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is your arrival point and you plan to take the Airport Express into the city, the sequence is immigration → checked-baggage collection → Meeters and Greeters Hall → city-bound Airport Express platform. MTR's Airport Station guide says arriving passengers can cross the greeting hall and board a city-bound train on the same level. The airport operator's access guide likewise describes a walkway outside the arrivals halls leading to the platform without a change of level. There is no reason to go down first to the bus terminus or taxi rank if your chosen mode is the train.

The Korean Naver version covers the same arrivals decision in Korean.

The image is an AI-generated concept, not a photograph, sign or route map of HKIA. Follow the current Airport Express signs and airport staff on site. Before buying a ticket, decide whether Hong Kong, Kowloon or Tsing Yi Station best fits your final address, and whether your arrival leaves enough time for the last train.

First decide whether this is an arrivals journey

This route assumes you will enter Hong Kong and leave the restricted area. If you are transferring between flights without entering Hong Kong, follow your airline's transfer instructions instead. Collect checked bags if required, complete immigration and customs, and enter the public arrivals hall. Then follow Airport Express signage toward Airport Station. “Same level” describes the connection from the public arrival hall to the platform. It does not mean that immigration, baggage claim, ticketing or walking from your aircraft take no time.

If you need mobility assistance, check the airport's special-needs access page. It says free wheelchair assistance can be pre-arranged through an airline or travel agent, with an agreed handover point that may include the Airport Express platform. Confirm the meeting place and onward assistance with your airline ahead of travel. A step-free level connection by itself is not a booked assistance service.

Choose a station, not just a train

The main city-bound Airport Express stops are Tsing Yi, Kowloon and Hong Kong. Compare the distance and onward connection from each station to your actual accommodation. MTR's timetable lists approximately 14 minutes from Airport to Tsing Yi, 22 minutes to Kowloon and 24 minutes to Hong Kong. These are station-to-station rail journeys, not estimates from your aircraft to your hotel. Add baggage, waiting, walking and any onward MTR or taxi leg. A 24-minute train does not make a distant hotel a 24-minute trip.

For a destination on Hong Kong Island, check what you will do after arriving at Hong Kong Station. For a Kowloon address, compare the actual location with Kowloon Station rather than assuming every Kowloon hotel is next door. Tsing Yi can be useful when its local connection suits your route. Use the MTR journey planner for the full destination, then check the relevant exit and last leg on the day.

Late arrival: work backward from the platform

The MTR timetable, marked effective 13 September 2026, lists the first Airport-to-city train at 05:54 and the last at 00:48. The 00:48 time is a departure from Airport Station, not a safe aircraft landing time. If your flight is scheduled to land near midnight, include immigration, baggage collection and the walk to the platform before deciding that the train is realistic. Starting ticket purchase just minutes before a last train is a fragile plan. MTR states that schedules may change without prior notice and asks passengers to check station information on the travel day.

If you may miss the train, check the airport's official transport information for available buses, taxis or other alternatives at your actual arrival time. This guide does not promise that a particular night service will run or quote a fixed alternative fare.

Tickets and fares: match the station and payment method

The official MTR ticket and fare page separates Airport Express fares by destination and payment method. Do not assume that a paper or QR single-journey ticket, Octopus, contactless bank card and supported wallet QR code all have identical terms. Check the fare for Airport Station to your chosen stop, each traveller's age and the payment method you will actually use. MTR notes that the child fare does not apply to contactless bank cards. The page also distinguishes where different tickets can be bought.

MTR describes a same-day return option, but its definition of “same day” and same-payment-method conditions matter. A one-way arrival traveller should not select a return product merely because a promotional heading sounds cheaper. Read the current official terms rather than relying on an old fare screenshot or reseller advertisement.

Questions travellers ask

Can I use this route while transiting without entering Hong Kong? This is an arrivals-to-public-area guide. Ask your airline and the relevant immigration authority about your particular transfer.

Do I have to change floors from the arrivals hall to the train? The present airport and MTR guides describe a same-level connection. Follow current signs if works or operations alter the route.

Does “24 minutes to Hong Kong Station” mean 24 minutes to my hotel? No. It is MTR's train-segment estimate. Airport formalities and travel beyond Hong Kong Station are separate.

Can a flight landing at 00:48 catch the last train? There is no such guarantee. You need time to clear arrival procedures and reach the platform, and must recheck that day's train service.

Day-of-travel checklist

  1. Confirm whether you are entering Hong Kong or remaining in flight transfer.
  2. Match your actual address to Hong Kong, Kowloon or Tsing Yi Station and plan the final leg.
  3. Allow for arrival formalities and baggage before checking the Airport Station timetable.
  4. Match destination, traveller age and payment method against MTR's live fare information.
  5. Follow actual Airport Express signs on arrival; switch to a verified alternative if the last train is no longer realistic.
