Arriving at SFO Terminal 3 with a rental-car reservation? There are two separate decisions: which AirTrain station to reach and which line serves the rental cars. SFO's AirTrain page says the station currently serving Terminal 3 is closed until the new facility opens in 2027. Its more specific T3 construction notice says the Terminal 2 station has been renamed the “Terminals 2 & 3 AirTrain Station” and serves both terminals; the general page still uses the future tense. The Blue Line, not the Red Line, serves the Rental Car Center. Source checked October 11, 2026 (KST). The images are conceptual and do not document SFO facilities or wayfinding.
Plan the station change before you follow the line color
Start by looking for access to the Terminals 2 & 3 AirTrain station, rather than assuming that the old T3 platform remains open. SFO's T3 construction notice directs AirTrain users toward E Walkway signage to the garage, but does not verify an exact onward walk to the station entrance. From Terminal 2, its general page says to take an elevator or escalator to Mezzanine – Level 3 and cross the passenger skybridge. That is T2 station access, not a turn-by-turn walk from every T3 arrival gate. Use current wayfinding and staff assistance; no exact T3-to-T2 walk time or completion of every physical sign replacement was verified.

At the station, check the train/destination information for Blue Line → Rental Car Center. The airport explicitly says the Red Line cannot reach either the Rental Car Center or Long-Term Parking. Do not infer from the word “AirTrain” alone that either line works for the car-rental journey. SFO's rental-car page independently identifies the Blue Line as the airport-terminal connection to the center, but it is another page from the same operator, not an independent eyewitness confirmation of live service.
What “24 hours” does—and does not—tell you
The airport advertises year-round, 24-hour AirTrain service, with station departures as frequent as every four minutes. It also warns that routine maintenance each night from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. can change normal operations and extend travel times. If travelling overnight, budget extra time and pay attention to AirTrain signs and messages on site. Its approximate 25-minute Blue Line full-loop time is not a promised T2-to-rental-center travel time. A closed T3 station is a station-specific exception, not proof that the entire AirTrain system has shut down.

The rental-car page uses broad language saying stations are in all terminals. For this itinerary, read it together with the more specific T3 closure notice on the AirTrain page. After getting off at the Rental Car Center, look up your particular agency's counter and hours on the rental-car page; 24-hour train operation does not make all rental desks 24-hour desks. The pages do not verify today's exact on-the-ground sign text, a specific train departure, your walking time, or a precise reopening date in 2027. Check the current airport notice and signs before and during the trip.
