Want a free national-park interpretation session in Korea this October? Start with the program name, not just the word “free.” On September 29, 2026, the Korea National Park Service (KNPS) announced 22 special guided interpretation programs run by experienced interpreters at 16 park offices and nature centers during October. Participation in these 22 programs is free. That does not make every park reservation, lodging facility or ordinary interpretive program free.
Narrow the 22 programs by interest
- Ecology and exploration (8): Examples include two porpoise-focused sessions near Choyangdo in Hallyeohaesang, a Bukhansan night-sky program and a Jirisan bird interpretation session. A wildlife-focused itinerary is not a guarantee of a porpoise sighting.
- Rest and recovery (9): The announcement lists Chiaksan's “Green Comfort: Let the Forest Rest Your Mind,” a forest meditation session at the Bukhansan Nature Exploration Center and a Namcheon woodland walk offered by Sobaeksan's northern office. “Healing” is the program theme, not a claim of clinical benefit.
- Culture and unusual perspectives (5): Examples are the Jirisan South office's sign-language nature interpretation, a ssanghwa-cha cultural session at the Naejangsan center and a Hallyeohaesang nature-and-culture talk. One program offering sign-language interpretation does not mean every program or date has the same accessibility support.
The complete list of 22 program names, offices, durations and inquiry phone numbers is in Appendix 1, PDF page 3 of the official announcement. The examples above help you choose a theme; they are not the entire schedule.

A four-step reservation check
- Choose by time as well as interest. The official table includes sessions lasting one to six hours. For example, the Bukhansan astronomy program is listed as two hours, the Bukhansan center's forest meditation as 90 minutes, and the Jirisan South sign-language session as six hours. “Free walk” does not establish route length, fitness level or accessibility.
- Open the official reservation screens. For park-office sessions, use the guided-program listings under interpretation/ecotourism/environmental education. For nature-center ecology trips, also check the nature-center booking page. KNPS says individual participants must reserve in advance to use these 22 programs without a participation fee.
- Match the exact program and date. Check that the listing's program name belongs to the announced 22, and confirm the actual date, available places, meeting point and participation requirements on its detail page. The September 29 press release alone does not prove every booking window is open or that a place is available.
- Check conditions again before departure. Weather, path restrictions and arrangements may change. If the route, equipment, travel time or accessibility matters to you, contact the listed park office using the inquiry number in the official PDF.
What exactly is free?
The October offer covers the participation fee for these 22 programs. It does not promise free transport, accommodation, other facilities or ordinary paid programs. For some nature-center products, KNPS says you pay the program fee when booking and receive a full waiver after use is confirmed. Check the payment and waiver conditions for the exact product; “free” does not necessarily mean a zero charge at checkout.
