Checked October 6, 2026. The Korea Heritage Service's September 30 announcement covers nine Joseon royal-tomb forest-trail sites totaling 19.04 km. For visitors deciding between two sites in Gyeonggi Province—Donggureung (동구릉) in Guri and Gwangneung (광릉) in Namyangju—the useful distinctions are the announced route, the temporary trail opening hours and ordinary tomb admission. This is a planning guide, not a firsthand visit or a guarantee of same-day access.
Choose the announced route, not an assumed walk time
The agency's original opening plan identifies:
- Donggureung: the Hwireung–Wolleung (휘릉–원릉) and Gyeongneung–tree nursery (경릉–양묘장) sections, with a reported trail length of 2,719 m.
- Gwangneung: the Hamabi stone marker–royal tomb–maple forest vicinity (하마비–능침–복자기나무 숲 일원), 945 m. The main announcement calls it the bokjagi maple forest trail.
These are lengths of the announced sections, not estimated walking times or evidence of step-free access. The 19.04 km refers to all nine sites, not just this pair.

Match the visit date to the temporary trail hours
The announcement schedules seasonal access from October 1 through November 29, 2026. The trail hours stated in its appendix are 09:00–17:00 in October and 09:00–16:30 in November. The operator's ordinary royal-tomb viewing schedule may show different seasonal hours or early viewing at Donggureung; that does not extend access to these temporary forest trails. Do not confuse the stated trail closing hour with an independently verified last-entry cutoff.
The announcement gives Monday as the regular closure and allows adjustments for weather and site conditions. The operator's visitor-hours page adds that when a regular closure overlaps a public or substitute holiday, the site opens and closes on the next non-holiday day instead. Check the notice for your specific date, especially on a holiday or after bad weather.
Free use of a trail is not free entry to the tomb
The announcement says visitors may use the opened trails freely; it does not say that tomb-site admission is universally free. The operator's admission page lists KRW 1,000 per adult individual for both Donggureung and Gwangneung. That standard bracket is Korean visitors aged 25–64 and international visitors aged 19–64; exemptions and discounts have separate eligibility and proof rules. The reviewed trail announcement does not state a separate trail participation fee. That absence should not be recast as a promise that the entire outing is free or that an optional programme has no charge.

Three checks before leaving
- Day: look for holiday substitution, weather-related changes and site notices for the date of travel.
- Route: compare the specific Donggureung or Gwangneung section in the official opening plan with the walk you want.
- Entry: distinguish the month's temporary trail end time from general viewing; check your own admission or exemption documents. The release lists the Eastern District Management Office at 031-579-4900 for inquiries. On-site access decisions take precedence over a past announcement.
